Carper, Coons, betray Delaware yet again — vote for tar sands oil pipeline

ACTION: Call Coons and Carper.  Email their staffers.  Sign the petition.  But do something!

Two of the worst Democratic senators in the US Senate are from Delaware:  Chris Coons and Tom Carper.  These two are what have been called “Democrats in Name Only” (DINOs) in the sense that they almost always vote for fat-cat interests and betray the public interest.

On March 22, 2013, Coons and Carper disgraced themselves and mocked the interests of Delaware by joining 15 other “Democratic” senators in voting to support the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline. Continue reading →

Bureaucrats trying to do their jobs but Gov. Markell betrays us yet again….

The single most important issue Delaware faces is sea level rise due to global warming.  Nobody knows exactly how fast the sea is going to rise, but the estimates keep increasing.  In my opinion, most indications point to greater rise than the official forecasts, But any realistic estimate of the situation says Delaware is going to change a lot. SB 234, latest Delaware “recycling” bill, shuts down container deposit program rather than fixing it.  This isn’t good enough.  Please ask Senators to hold off voting on this bill until it can be fixed.

Last week was the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day in 1970.  Few serious environmental campaigners have much interest any more in Earth Day, which is mostly now celebrated by big polluters “greenwashing” themselves.  But it is still a good time to reflect on where we are and how we arrived. Massachusetts Medical Society’s opposition to biomass plants

Comment: This was published in the Greenfield [Mass.] Recorder on Jan 26, 2010, but doesn’t seem to be available online. This is not the only medical society to oppose these burners. Delaware, due to wise actions ten years ago, already has in place laws against “biomass” burners. These laws are under attack and need to be strengthened and clarified.

Most people who aren’t compromised probably get that if global warming is real, belching smokestacks aren’t the way to fix it.

I’ve come to suspect that one reason so many people don’t take climate change seriously is they can’t believe honest people would promote incinerating forests, manure, and garbage as “solutions.” The public is smelling scams. The public nose is working–climate policy has become a feeding frenzy of special interests who don’t give a damn about the future of anything but their pocketbooks. Continue reading →

BASF, with help from “Clean Air Council,” seeks to roll back Del. environmental laws, build highly-polluting “biomass” incinerator in Newport, DE

Today, January 12, 2010, the Delaware General Assembly goes back into session.  As usual, this presents both threats and opportunities.

Delaware has few environmental distinctions.  One of these few is a strong law against incinerators.

Since 2000 this law, championed by State Senator David McBride, has protected thousands of people from death and disease caused by air pollution.
